MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

NUCO LEVEL 1 AWARD IN AWARENESS OF FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH (SCOTLAND LEVEL 4)

This course is designed for everyone. It gives learners the confidence to:
- Recognise the signs of a suspected mental health condition
- Start supportive, stigma-free conversations
- Signpost individuals to the right professional help

Whether in the workplace or the community, this course is a valuable introduction to First Aid for Mental Health and a perfect first step for anyone wanting to build their awareness.

What you’ll learn:

- Understanding what First Aid for Mental Health is

- How to identify common mental health conditions

- Practical ways to provide advice and begin a conversation

DURATION

This is a 4-hour course.

This course is informative and engaging. The qualification is assessed through a multiple-choice question paper. A Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. No external assessors are required.

CERTIFICATION

Upon successful completion of the qualification assessment, Learners will be awarded the Ofqual regulated Level 1 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health (RQF)/Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health at SCQF Level 4. This qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.

 NUCO LEVEL 2 AWARD IN FIRST AID FOR MENTAL HEALTH (SCOTLAND LEVEL 5)

This course is suitable for everyone but is specifically designed to help employers build and maintain a positive mental health culture in the workplace. Learners will gain comprehensive knowledge of common mental health conditions and develop the skills to take action if a condition is suspected.

Those completing the course will be recognised as First Aiders for Mental Health – acting as a point of contact within the workplace to support colleagues, offer guidance, and encourage early intervention.

Building on the Level 1/4 Award in Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health, this course introduces the First Aid for Mental Health Action Plan, giving learners the confidence to:
- Provide advice and reassurance                                   - Signpost individuals to professional help
- Support colleagues while they access treatment

The course also explores the effects of drugs and alcohol, equipping learners with the knowledge to assist employers in creating a healthier, more supportive working environment.

This advanced course builds on the Level 2/5 Award in First Aid for Mental Health, expanding knowledge and skills to cover a wider range of mental health conditions. Learners will explore in more detail the different therapies and professional support options available, as provided by healthcare professionals during treatment.

While suitable for anyone in the workplace, this qualification is particularly aimed at those in supervisory or managerial roles who are responsible for:
- Supporting staff wellbeing
- Creating a positive mental health culture
- Leading First Aid for Mental Health provision within their organisation

 Course Syllabus

You’ll gain in-depth understanding of:

- What First Aid for Mental Health is

- Recognising a wide range of mental health conditions

- Providing advice and starting supportive conversations

- Drugs and alcohol and their impact on mental health

- Developing a First Aid for Mental Health action plan

This course is informative and engaging. Summative practical assessment is ongoing by the instructor each day, along with a written assessment on each day. A Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. No external assessors are required.

CERTIFICATION

Upon successful completion of the qualification assessment, Learners will be awarded the Ofqual regulated Level 3 Award in Supervising First Aid for Mental Health (RQF)/Award in Leading First Aid in Mental Health at SCQF Level 6. This qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.
